Our Hearts Are With You Christchurch

Yesterday we had a special hui to remember the innocent people whose lives were taken in Christchurch on Friday. We send our love and thoughts to their family and friends who are left behind.

We spent the day learning about discrimination. We read "A Bad Case of Stripes" by David Shannon and "White Socks Only" by Evelyn Coleman. These are two great stories about finding strength in being yourself.

You can listen to White Socks Only being read here:

We are also making paper dolls to help Emily and Daniel Barback. We loved their idea and what it stands for.
Quotes from the Education Central website

"In the wake of the Christchurch mosque shootings, the Bay of Plenty siblings want Kiwi kids to show the world that the shooter’s actions don’t define “their New Zealand”...

Daniel, aged 10, hopes schools, pre-schools and families around New Zealand ̶ and maybe even other countries ̶ will join in The Paper Doll Project as a way of demonstrating inclusion and acceptance of all cultures.

You can find out about the project at this link and maybe join in.

We also wrote our thoughts about what discrimination means. This is what Demitrji had to say:

"I think discrimination is when people talk about your counrtry, where you're from and colour, it's called a lot of things but racism is one of those words. I think a world without discrimination would be amazing for me. Everybody would be grateful for what is happening. Black and white shaking hands, being best friends. After all, black, white, it does not matter. We are all the same in our bodies, full of love."

  1. What powerful learning Room 11. The thing which has made me proud this week is seeing the people of Aotearoa come together with incredible strength and compassion. You have demonstrated these qualities with the learning and discussion that you have been doing in R11-thank you for your beautiful, caring hearts x
