Sgt. Stubby

Sgt. Stubby was a real life hero. During World War I, tens of millions of soldiers went to war. But did you know that millions of animals went, too? One such animal was Stubby, a stray dog who went on to become a war hero.

An official mascot of the U.S. Army’s 102nd Infantry Regiment, Stubby – named for his stubby tail – served for 8 months during World War I and participated in 17 battles on the Western Front. He saved his regiment from surprise gas attacks, found and comforted wounded soldiers, and once caught a German spy by his trousers all because he had been taught to recongise how a German speaks and know that he was the enemy. He held him "prisoner"  until American soldiers found him!
We watched the movie Sgt. Stubby.  Here are our movie reviews...

"Sgt. Stubby was a homeless dog who stumbled across Conroy, (An American soldier.) He followed Private Conroy to his training. Sgt. Stubby trained with Conroy and he learned how to salute. He went to war as their mascot. He helped by finding buried men, warning them of poisonous gas and killing rats.  We think this movie was AMAZINg  and a bit sad.  We think this movie is for ages 7+. It’s a movie we think that everyone would love and you will probably shed a tear too. We give this movie 8 out of 10 because it made some people bored and some people cry as well as keeping people engaged with the movie." - Esila, Demitrji & Brian

"A hungry and chubby dog who was a stray, found his way into an army camp. He met a man named Conroy  who was a Private. Conroy had nothing to do with this fat pup but still began to look after it. After a while Conroy gave the pup a name. It was Stubby. So from then on Stubby trained with the army and he even knew how to salute. Days went by and it was time for the soldiers to go and fight with the French in France. Stubby went along too. Soon after that Stubby begain  to save lives. Little did anyone know  that he was going to become a great hero. We would give it a 9 out of 10 because there are sad bits and very happy parts. We would recommend it to anyone aged eight and over. We don’t think little children should watch it because they could get upset" - Helaina , Rangi & Mikey

" Sgt.Stubby was a dog who started as a stray, until he saw the soldiers marching into the gates where they trained. Stubby followed the soldiers and then he went around to see if there were any gaps to get through so he went underneath the fence to see the soldiers. He met Private Robert Conroy and he was trained until it was time to go .Stubby was a hero for many people. He was an amazing dog that was really helpful in the war. In my opinion I thought that Stubby was Very helpful and caring to others. We recommend this movie is 10+ because I think kids would love it as well as parents would get a good picture. I would rate this a 9/10 because we really enjoyed it." - Merceius & Ocean

"Sgt. Stubby is about a stray, loney and chubby dog becoming a world hero. During WW1, Stubby was wandering around when he stumbled upon a group of young soldiers whom he followed into their training grounds and that was when he found his soon to be best friend Private Conroy, one of the many American soldiers. Throughout the time at camp, he learnt many important things. Stubby would train with all the soldiers. He even learnt how to Salute. Stubby soon became the soldier’s mascot. Then he went off to war. Personally I’m not a huge fan of this movie it was just a bit too gloomy for me however my partner Nanasi though it was quite enjoyable and very sad. Her favorite bit was near the end when the war ended. I would not recommend this movie for children under the age of 6 it might be a bit too graphic and sad for them. We give this movie a 3 out of 5 stars because it was good but not really the kind of movie I like to watch."  - Shiah & Nanasi
"Sgt. Stubby was a street dog that went looking around for food. He then stumbled across a group of people marching. One of them saw Stubby and gave him a cookie. Stubby really liked that person and followed him to the camp. The soldier’s name was Conroy and Stubby did everything that Conroy and his friends did. Stubby could also salute. Off went Conroy without Stubby but Stubby followed him and snuck onto the boat. Sgt. Stubby became a hero. He saved many lives and killed many rats. The movie is Awesome and we all liked it. The age for this movie would be 8+ because some of the parts in this movie are not suitable for little kids like 6 or under. I give this movie a 10/10 because it’s a movie about a dog saving lives and being a hero." - Ezrah & Bryce

"Sgt. Stubby was a dog that was stray and dirty on the streets. He came across a soldier called Conroy in the American Army. Sgt. Stubby trained with Conroy in the army. During  the war, Conroy was a very amazing owner to Sgt. Stubby. Sgt. Stubby was the mascot of the group of soldiers in the war.
We think that the movie was exciting and some bits were sad and brave. Our rating for the movie was ten out of ten because Sgt. Stubby saved the soldiers and protected them by warning them that there was danger coming towards them. We recommend this movie for children seven and over because it's very emotional for younger children." - Laurel & Zantye

"Sgt Stubby was a street dog until he met Private Robert Conroy. He served in the USA’s army in WW1 in 1917. After that Stubby followed Conroy to his training camp, they become best friends.  He was a lifesaver to all of the soldiers when he went to war. Allando thinks the movie was SUPER AWESOME  and it was a bit sad at the end. We are going to give it 5 out of 10 because some bits were a little boring and it was exciting at other times. This should be for ages 10 and up because if kids the age of 6 and down watch it they  might be traumatized forever because people die in this movie." - Allando & Colin

"Sgt Stubby, the stray k9 wandered into a military training ground during WW1. He was looking for a soldier who had given him a treat when they marched round the town. For the rest of their training, Sgt. Stubby trains with the military. He was a special dog who could salute and march in a straight line. He was fed and  treated just like all the other soldiers were if not better. Sgt. Stubby went off to war as well as all of the other soldiers, Sergeant Stubby was well cared at war and properly feed. He saved over a hundred soldiers. Sgt. Subby became a legend.
I recommend  this to +8 because there is a lot of emotion." -   Kane & Vai

"In 1917 Stubby was a street dog until he met Conroy when he threw a cookie to him and then
Stubby followed Conroy  to the training area but was blocked off by two soldiers guarding the front gates so no one could go in. Stubby  tried to find another way to get to Conroy so he dug under the gate and then he started training to start his adventure at war. He helped in many ways such as learning to find  soldiers who had been buried and warn the soldiers of the mustard gas.  We would give it 10/10 because it is kinda like drama / adventure movie and we would recommend it for 2+" - Peter & George

"Sgt. Stubby was a dirty, homeless, stray dog. Then one day he came across a loving, caring young gentlemen called Conroy who’s rank was Private. A few days later Sgt. Stubby became a mascot. If Sgt. Stubby became part of the army why shouldn’t he be able to train? When Sgt. Stubby was training before they left, Conroy had to leave him with the chef because he wasn’t allowed to go. But Sgt. Stubby would never let that happen so he tracked down the ship and went off to war. We would recommend this to 7+ because it has a lot of loud noise and it might be too violent for anyone younger. We would rate this a 10/10 because it is a very emotional movie and it's quite funny." - Abi & Destiny

"Sgt Stubby started off as a stray dog. One day he bumped into a young soldier. His name was Conroy. Conroy left to go to a camp to train for war. Stubby went with him. Then he became a mascot and headed off to war. He saved many lives at war and became an American dog hero. This movie is really awesome. It would be suitable for ages eight and over. Children under six may become upset at some sad points and may cry at the loud gunshots. We would give this movie a 10/10 because it is very emotional." - Mikayah & Gafatasi

"Sgt. Stubby was a dog that lived on the streets. He came across a guy who was in the army named Robert Conroy. Stubby went with the soldiers as they were marching. He went to war secretly and saved hundreds of lives. People appreciated him in many ways. We like this move so much so we give it a 9/10 so you should watch it .It was a nine out of ten because it gave a very strong message and it was hilarious. We think that it is suitable for eight year olds and older. If you like watching movies about WWI then this is the movie to watch." - Henry, Jahzay & James
"Sgt. Stubby was a brave dog in World War One but he was a street dog at first until he met this man named Conroy. His rank was Private and he was fighting for the USA army. He gave Stubby a biscuit when it was time to say goodbye to their families. Stubby found a hole under a fence and found Conroy. That is when he started his training and he turned into an amazing mascot dog. He ate with all of the soldiers and he was not allowed to enter the train but he did it anyway. He saved many lives. He was a heroic and intelligent dog. I would like to give this beautiful movie a big fat 10 because it was a mixture of emotions so I love this movie. My friend here would like this movie a beautiful, lovely big 10 out of 10 because it will make her cry sometimes. So you have to like this movie but I prefer 7 and + to watch because I think 5 or 6 year olds will be too emotional so please watch this amazing, wonderful and sweet hearted movie." -April & Evalonie
