Box Making

In maths we have been talking about 3D shapes and nets.

Today,  manufacturers are becoming very clever about how they make boxes without having to use glue, tape or any other fixings. We looked at a couple of shoe boxes that had quite complex nets where tabs and flaps all worked together to hold the box together then when they weren't in use, the boxes could be flattened and recycled.

Our challenge was to make a box of any size with a lid that could hold a book.

Here we are at work:

After some modifications and much discussion, we had achieved varying levels of success.

When it came to evaluating our box, we realised that we didn't have a criteria so together we decided that a box is:
  • Something that has six sides.
  • Not a bag
  • A shape that has five fixed sides and one that is open or removable.
  • A cube or a rectangular prism.
