Maori Language Week

What a busy term. Last week was Tongan Language Week, we’ve had a rugby tournament, a basketball tournament, a soccer tournament, our girls soccer team to the champions of champions tournament,  Cook Island Language Week, a trip to the zoo, culture practises and... this week it has been Maori Language Week. Image result for maori language week 2018 posters

We started and ended the week with assemblies. We’ve sung waiata, had full school jump jam, practised our pepeha, found out the Maori place names for cities and located these along with special places to our families on a New Zealand map. We have drawn Maori patterns and even had Miss Baird in to do a Te Reo activity and teach us a dance. It has been a fun filled week that has zoomed past super fast.

Keeping Maori language strong is the theme or message of this week.
We can do this if we...
Ako - Learn
Whakarongo - Listen
Waiata - Sing
Panui - Read
Tuhi - Write
Korero - Speak

Check out some of the action from the assemblies. A huge thank you to Mrs Warid for all her work and to Chris and Jay-leon’s dad Chris, for coming to speak to us today. A big shout out to Silas who stood up in front of assembly and said his pepeha to the whole school. We were super proud, especially because you didn’t know what you were going to be asked to do but you took the challenge and did it anyway. We were also treated to a beautiful song from Chris and Miss Thompson.

What a terrific week.

N.B.  there is a reason we are teachers and not actors... sorry for the bad acting.
